VeriFactu and mandatory e-invoicing: how to comply without changing how you work

The problem​

VeriFactu and e-invoicing are no longer optional. If you invoice in Spain, the way you issue has to meet new requirements: records that are chained, gapless, and impossible to alter after the fact. The rollout runs through 2026, and companies come before most self-employed workers, so your exact date depends on your legal form. Confirm it against the AEAT's official calendar.

The fair question is simple: do I have to change how I work, buy some obscure software, or become a tax expert? No. What has to change is what happens under each invoice, not your day-to-day.

What VeriFactu requires, in one sentence​

Every invoice has to be recorded in a chained, tamper-proof way, with an identifier the AEAT can verify. No more deleting or rewriting invoices by hand. The law targets the software you use, so what matters is that your tool complies, not that you do it yourself.

How Frihet handles it, step by step​

You keep invoicing the same way. You create the invoice as always —client, line items, taxes— and Frihet does the rest underneath.

  1. Chaining and seal. Each invoice is signed with a SHA-256 hash chain that links it to the previous one. Numbering is sequential and gapless, and the record is immutable: once issued, it cannot be altered.
  2. QR and AEAT verification. Frihet generates the AEAT QR code on the invoice PDF and sends the record over XML SOAP to the VeriFactu system. It is a flow verified against the AEAT sandbox environment.
  3. Your certificate, encrypted. You upload your digital certificate (.pfx or .p12) once and it is stored encrypted. Frihet adds the producer's responsible declaration the rules require, so you don't have to draft it.
  4. Alerts if something slips. If a gap appears in the sequential numbering, Frihet warns you before it becomes a problem in an inspection. The fix comes in the alert itself, not in a manual.

There's no "VeriFactu mode" checkbox to flip and pray. Compliance rides on the same "issue" button you already use.

E-invoicing: public sector and Europe​

VeriFactu is one part. E-invoicing is the other, and Frihet covers the formats you may be asked for:

  • Public administration (B2G) in Spain: Facturae 3.2.2 with XAdES-EPES signature and DIR3 centres, sent directly to the FACe portal.
  • Europe and cross-border invoicing: the European standard EN16931 in its usual formats —Factur-X, XRechnung, UBL 2.1 and CII.

The fiscal autopilot suggests when reverse charge, an e-invoice, or a SEPA payment QR applies, without you having to memorise the theory. You see the hint, decide, move on.

If you automate your operations​

You don't need to open the app to comply. The copilot understands plain-language instructions, so you can create and send an invoice just by describing it. For automated flows, the MCP server (@frihet/mcp-server v1.15.2, 157 tools) connects Frihet to your AI assistant, and the public REST API with OpenAPI 3.1 lets you wire it into whatever you already run. The VeriFactu record is generated either way —whether the invoice comes from a click or an API call.

An example​

Marta is a freelance designer in Valencia. She invoices studios, the occasional city council, and one client in Germany. She used to have three separate problems: the public invoice kept getting bounced over its format, she wasn't sure her spreadsheet would pass VeriFactu, and the German client asked for "a European format" she didn't know how to produce.

Now she creates the invoice once. The council's goes out as signed Facturae to FACe; the German one, in EN16931 format; and every single one is chained with its hash, its sequential numbering, and its AEAT QR. Marta learned nothing about XAdES or SHA-256. She just stopped worrying about it.
